Jimmy Iovine (born March 11, 1953) is an entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the co-founder of Interscope Records, Beats Electronics, the USC Iovine and Young Academy, and the Iovine and Young Center.

Career[]

Early career[]

Iovine began his music career at Record Plant recording studio in New York City. He helped curate tracks for artists like John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, and Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.[citation needed]

Interscope Records[]

In 1990, Iovine co-founded Interscope Records and moved into a music executive role. There, he created a record label where artists could fully express themselves. Iovine helped propel the careers of powerhouse musicians like Gwen Stefani, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Lady Gaga, and Nine Inch Nails.[citation needed]

Beats Electronics[]

Though finding great success in the hip hop records market at Interscope Records with Dr. Dre, Iovine realized that with the rise of digital file-sharing websites such as Napster that music companies would no longer "exist without technology." Iovine met with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and senior VP Eddy Cue to better understand their way of thinking. This led to the creation of Beats Electronics, which encompassed Beats by Dre and Beats Music. In 2014, Apple acquired Beats for $3 billion. Iovine stayed with Apple as the head of Apple Music until 2018, when the last installment for Apple's acquisition was paid. Iovine then stepped down from his role at Apple, stating that he had run out of "personal runway."[1]

Philanthropy[]

Working at Beats spurred Dr. Dre and Iovine’s philanthropic efforts in the education space. At Beats, Iovine and Dr. Dre observed a disconnect between creative arts and technology. That's when the two realized that education was siloed, meaning that students were well-versed in creative arts or technology, but rarely both, which limited their future career opportunities. Driven by a passion to make students more marketable to potential employers, Iovine and Dr. Dre co-founded the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation at the University of Southern California. The Academy, which opened in 2014, prepares students for the tech-driven global marketplace through an integrative academic framework and real-world professionalizing experiences. Interdisciplinary coursework offerings include human-centered design, technology, entrepreneurship, and communication. In Los Angeles in 2022, Iovine and Dr. Dre launched the first Iovine and Young Center (IYC) – “high school, reimagined.” The IYC features a high school curriculum modeled after the USC Iovine and Young Academy.[citation needed]

In pop culture[]

Iovine was the music supervisor for films such as Sixteen Candles, Streets of Fire, and Scrooged. Iovine and Dr. Dre were profiled in the 2017 HBO miniseries "The Defiant Ones."[2] Grammy and Emmy-nominated, Iovine entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Iovine is an investor in Complex NTWRK and Gin & Juice By Dre and Snoop. In March 2024, he spoke at Dr. Dre’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.[citation needed]

Iovine was portrayed by actor Mark Sherman in the 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton.[3]
